Great expectations: Obama will have to deliver

20 January 2009 is the day when Barack Hussein Obama will become the 44th president of the United States. Over and over, Obama told American voters if they stuck with him "we will change this country and change the world." They did, and now their expectations for him to deliver are firmly planted on his shoulders.

Atop Obama's challenge list is the global and domestic turmoil that he inherits. The worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Then there's the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, nuclear standoffs with North Korea and Iran. Obama clearly sees Pakistan and Afghanistan as the frontline of the terror war. The staging of the 26/11 assault on Mumbai, along with attacks on NATO supply lines passing through Peshawar, could be a riposte to Obama's plans. And as the fighting in Gaza this week shows, there will be other conflicts.

What would be the new world order under Obama's rule over the US?

Would Obama be able to deliver great expectations?

J & K results, a message to separatists

More important than the election results to the contentious state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) that are declared (which produced a hung assembly with the National Conference as the single largest party) has been the voter turnout. If 62 percent of Kashmiris chose to defy the boycott call given by secession breathing elements, then it clearly indicates that the

people of the state, unlike many Muslim societies that reel under authoritarian rule, are willing to pay their allegiance to the Indian constitution.

The successful completion of free and fair elections with record participation from the citizenry gives India a powerful weapon to counter Pakistan’s propaganda on Kashmir. Do you agree?

Do you think high voter turnout in the seven-phased Jammu and Kashmir election and the subsequent results is a reply to separatists that 'their time is over'?

National Youth Day
12 January

In 1984, the Government of India declared and decided to observe the Birthday of Swami Vivekananda (12 January, according to English calendar) as National Youth Day every year from 1985 onwards. To quote from the Government of India’s Communication, ‘it was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian Youth.’

The Headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission as well as their branch centres observe the birthday of Swami Vivekananda.

War the only option?

The strong statements from India's External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi give a strong indication that both India and Pakistan are close to war. Air vigilance has been stepped up in both countries, especially in Pakistan after Pranab warned Pakistan that India keeps all

option open if Pakistan fails to deliver on its promises to crack down on terrorists. Pakistan scrambled its fighter jets over all major cities including Islamabad. The BSF is on high alert on Punjab border. Going to war as a deliberate choice is not an option that can be easily exercised. The impact of an India-Pakistan war will be felt beyond the subcontinent.

Is the war a solution to the problem between India and Pakistan?

Do you think India may lose patience sooner or later and forced to take a tough stance on Pakistan?
