This was one birth anniversary which was nothing less than starry as celebrated names from the twin worlds of fashion and entertainment descended on Mumbai shores to wish the Lakme Fashion Week a happy tenth birthday! Yes, the LFW has turned 10, and along with the years, the glitz, the glamour and the entertainment quotient has increased that many folds. Even the venue has changed: from the sober but classy NCPA to the glossy, expensive and fashionable Hotel Grand Hyatt.

The Week began with the ‘Then- Now-Forever’ themed show that had all the grand finale designers who have showcased their collections in the last 10 years, including Ritu Beri, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Suneet Verma and other big names, showcasing their creations at the opening show and walking the ramp. It was mesmerising to watch the fashion divas and gurus walking the ramp together and Tarun Tahiliani concluding the anniversary show.

Dwelling on the changes that the LFW has witnessed over the years, designer Anita Dongre, who was back after a gap of two years, said, “It has become more professional. The organisers are making it easy for young designers to get a foothold in the industry and also for seniors to showcase their creations.’’

Anita created an illusion of grand colours on the ramp with her collection `Jaipur, My Jaipur’ for the Spring/Summer show of the LFW. She showcased the prints and colours of Rajasthan, mostly in tie-dye prints. Though known for sober pastels, she went all colours lighting the ramp with brilliant coloured lehengas, skirts, churidar-kalidar kurtas and saris, which received a huge round of applause. “Colours dominate the lives of the people of Rajasthan. Being from Jaipur, it was natural of me that I play with colours in my recent collection,’’ said the diva.

Another senior designer Rocky S and a favourite at the LFW, said, “ LFW is one of the most established primary fashion councils in this industry that encourages new talent as well as helps veteran designers build their brands. With the passing years, it has come of age with changes in the market demands, lifestyle and fashion awareness. It has become the most sought after event to showcase a designer's talent.’’

He continued, “Even after so many shows at this event, I still get very enthusiastic about this since I believe that for a designer the journey never ends. One has to keep proving himself over the years to reach a point of perfection.’’

Talking about the LFW he said, “This is the third season I am showcasing here. It is becoming more and more professional. But at the same time I feel sometimes the jury must be very strict and maintain only quality work for the event to get really noticed in the international market. Some time a designer takes this platform for granted and showcases collections which don’t suit such a large and prestigious platform.’’

Kallol Datta, who recently showcased at the maiden Kolkata Fashion Week, said, “LFW is more professional. It has a bigger audience, bigger press and as it is based in Mumbai, a huge presence of Hindi film industry. It is a privilege to exhibit my collection here.’’

Having been brought up in the Middle-East, Kallol detests embroidery, bling and volatile colours. “I had enough of it all as I grew up!’’ he said. Using natural fabrics like kora, cotton, mul, voile, net and crepe, Kallol showcased the sober and noglitz look with his signature prints which were truly unique. For instance, drapes appeared at the hemand at the back, dual tones were used for front-wrap dresses and the silhouette was egg-shaped with fullness at the midriff graduating down or in front.
